Boots were originally made of leather. To make a tall heel, several pieces had to be layered together. As new materials became available, shoe makers started experimenting with different layer materials to make a more comfortable shoe.

Today, a shoe heel will typically be built from two parts: a soft midsole for cushioning and a hard outsole to resist wear from contact with the ground. Pumps will also have a separate heel breast, which covers the side of the heel facing the toe. While most modern shoes have an outsole that completely covers the heel, cowboy boots and dancing shoes often retain exposed insole layers for easy repair: After a layer has worn down, it can be removed and replaced with pieces that can cut by the shoemaker. Tap shoes have metal outsole plates that wear out quickly, so they are attached to the insole with screws. This makes replacement easy enough to be done by the wearer.
