Why does being tickled make you laugh?

Tickling seems more of an attack. Laughing is a strange response to being attacked.

In the latest research i have heard of scientists believe that it was once used as a primitive defense mechanism against small insects and spiders and many other creepy-crawlies. Since many are dangerous to the human body by spreading diseases and infecting us with poisons. So it would become necessary to develop a natural response since they were so small it would be hard for us to find them, also that is why it feels like an attack for many people rather than a pleasure.

I can only guess, of course, but when I'm tickled, I feel as if it's an extreme pleasure sensation overload, to the point where it's way too much to handle without laughing and screaming. For example, a light scratching feels good and can even be quite relaxing, but when just the pressure and/or speed of that scratching are increase, it becomes something often described as horrible torture. I have a love hate relationship with tickling. I laugh crazily and beg the person tickling me to stop, but when it's over, I kind of... want more. Weird, huh? As far as tickling others goes, I have only a love relationship with that, and will gladly tickle someone, sometimes way too much, without much provocation. It's my evil streak..

Laughing from being tickled is an innate response that people are born with. Even babies laugh when they are tickled, so it can’t be something that is learned. As to the reason why we laugh when we are tickled, scientists do not know, and it is very likely that we will never know. We don’t know why we laugh when things are funny either. It is simply a human response. It may have had some other purpose long ago, but that purpose is lost with time.

Doctors have found out, though, that stimulating certain parts of the brain can cause laughter. Doctors discovered this accidentally when they were performing surgery on a young girl. A 2 centimeter square area of her brain, when given a small electric current, made her laugh. As the doctors repeated the event, the girl simply said that it feels like something is funny.

We know also that tickling depends on being surprised. This is why we can’t tickle ourselves. Our body can’t fool itself as to where and how our hands will be touching ourselves. A degree of tension is also needed. The tension caused by the surprise makes tickling work.

Scientists continue to study laughter. The science of laughter is called gelotology. Doctors say laughter really is good medicine. Laughing helps us to relax and it relieves tension. Laughing also helps us breath. While laughing, we take air deeply into our lungs. There have been, however, a couple of cases where laughter has done harm. Laughing also increases blood pressure and heart rate, so people who have heart conditions or extremely high blood pressure may actually hurt themselves by laughing.
