Tie dying is pretty simple, so long as you don't mind if the clothes look a little less well-crafted than store-bought tie dyed shirts! You'll need a few pain white or other pale colored t-shirts, and some liquid fabric dye. It's available at most craft stores. You'll also need some plastic bowls or small buckets, and you might want to put a tarp down and do this outside, as well, wearing clothes you don't mind ruining! Tie dying can be messy if you're not careful!
Mix up several colors of the die in the bowls/buckets. The color combinations are up to you; if your son wants purple, orange and puce, go for it!
Take one of the items, and twist it up tightly. For example, hold shirts from one sleeve and the opposite bottom corner, and twist into a long rope.
Keeping it twisted, dip small portions of the shirt into the different colors of die, trying not to overlap too much, or else the colors will blend and bleed.
Once you think you have enough color, gently untwist the shirt and hang it up to dry. You can change the designs by twisting the shirts in different ways. Using fabric dye lets the shirt be permanently dyed, and your shirt should last a long time!
This is a fun project for you and your son to do together, and I hope it turns out well! Just be open to some interesting results!
