In the Supreme Court of the United States, (also known as SCOTUS,) there are nine justices total: the Chief Justice and the eight Associate Justices. Right now, the justices are as follows: the Chief Justice is John Roberts, and the Associate Justices are Samuel Alito, John Paul Stevens, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Sonia Sotomayor, Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas, Anthony Kennedy, and Stephen Breyer. The reason there are nine justices is to avoid a tie, so that all decisions by the court, when they are reached, are clear and final.
In case you didn't know, Supreme Court Justices are nominated by the President of the United States, and then confirmed by the Senate through a majority vote. They have no set term limit, and usually serve well into old age, so their appointment is usually a relatively major political occurrence, because the Commander in Chief at the time gets to nominate a Justice who will represent he and his party's interests for years to come.
Some famous past Justices are Sandra Day O'Connor and Thurgood Marshall. Justice O'Connor was the first female member of the Supreme Court, and she served from 1981 to 2006. Justice Marshall was the first African American Justice and served from 1967 to 1991.
