This distinction goes to the single-celled organism known as algae -- you know, pond scum (and lake scum and ocean scum and...)

As part of the process of photosynthesis, algae (like other plants) converts carbon dioxide into oxygen.

Great, but why algae, you say? Aren't there more trees, grass, and decorative houseplants in the world? No! Remember that more than 70% of the earth's surface is water, giving algae ample room to thrive and do its thing.

It's also worth noting that there are more than 5,000 distinct species of algae, and all of them contribute to the creation of oxygen in the earth's atmosphere. So the question was really well-phrased, because this isn't a single species of organism -- it's an entire group of organisms.

Next time you see algae, take a moment to appreciate what it does for all of us. Sure, it can be slimy and unpleasant to look at, but you can't judge a single-cell organism by its outward appearance!
