Point to your waist.
If you are a man, you are pointing at an area just above your legs. If you are a woman, you are pointing at the bottom of your rib cage. Why? Fashion.
Originally, both men's and women's clothing had high waists, but as men shifted away from suits in the late 1950's, the waist moved downward for comfort. Today, high-waisted men's pants are only seen in the most traditional of suits. If you see an old man wearing high-waisted pants, it's not just to hide his hernia support: He's emulating the fashions of his youth.
Women are starting to get into the act with the recent popularity of low-rise jeans; maybe your grandkids will be asking the same question about old women.
