How do I make playdough at home?
Playdough is similar to salt dough used to make decorative breads. While it isn't tasty, it is non-toxic.
Here's what you'll need for a basic dough:
1 cup water
1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
1 tbsp vegetable oil
1/2 tbsp Cream of Tartar
The Cream of Tartar is optional, but it will help make the dough more elastic.
Mix these ingredients in a pan over low heat: you aren't really trying to cook the dough, just bring it together. It's ready when it pulls away from the pot and no longer feels sticky.
Kneed the dough ball until it feels smooth. This doesn't have leavening, so it will feel a lot denser than a bread dough. At this point you can add food coloring: make a hole in the dough, add a couple drops, and mix. If your child is helping you, you may want to dye the dough using powdered drink mix. This is less likely to stain and will give the playdough a pleasant smell, although the colors won't be as dark.
Keep this dough in an airtight container. If it starts to harden, the dough can be revived with a little water.
