First, select the text. This can be done by holding down the shift key and tapping the arrow buttons, or by holding down the first mouse button and moving the cursor over the text. The text and the background will change color.
Next, you will need to tell the computer to copy the highlighted text. Almost every program will have the options to cut, copy, and paste in the "Edit" menu, or you can use these hot keys:
Ctrl + C: Copy
Ctrl + X: Cut (Copy and delete your selection at the same time.)
Ctrl + V: Paste
If you are using a Mac, you will need to press the Command button instead of Ctrl: it's the one next to the space bar labeled with an Apple and a box with circles on the corners.
Some programs will also list these options when you right-click over a selection.
Finally, click where you want to place the text you just copied, and select "paste."
The text is stored in a "clipboard" handled by your operating system. This means text copied in one program can be pasted into another one.
