Okay first of all, I am not a cat person.

But experts say cat tounges are rough
Because there are little glands on the middle of the tounge
that are neatly sided side by side. They use this to groom
tangles out of their fur (causing hairballs

), female
cats have rougher tounges to lick their young ones after
birth.

I know it looks like this because I've seen my cats tounge

As far as the fancy pants reason, I'm not sure. But if you look really close you will realize the roughness comes from hairs on the cat's tongue about a millimeter long and curve toward the back of the mouth. this is used as a natural "comb" for the cat to keep itself groomed and clean.

the reason cats cough up furballs is because these hairs collect fur on them during a grooming session and they swallow it, it then collects in their stomach and causes regurgitation.

without doing any research thats all i know, hope this helped
